How many of us remember the signifigance of today's date 3rd. September. I'll remind those too young to know. On the 3rd. September 1939 (67 years ago) Britain declared war on Germany - we were at war.
I was only eight years old but I remember the moment when it was announced on the radio. I was sitting with my doll on the old hide couch in the kitchen. The radio announcer - it could have been Alvar Ladell, gave us the awful news. My mother, who had experienced the First Great War, promptly burst into tears.
That moment is etched in my mind.
Where were you?

I wasn't born. But my parents brought us up on stories of the war, especially the bombings in Sheffield.
I have much admiration for anyone who lived through that, I wonder if we as a country would be so resilient if it were to happen now (god forbid!)
